THIRTY

Margaret arrived late to the Santa Fe spa. The entire facility exuded a sense of serenity. Her suite offered the perfect combination of soothing aromas, natural sounds that encouraged rest and relaxation, lavish décor, and plenty of expensive wine chilling and waiting to be served. After several glasses, she drifted off to sleep with the sounds of a gentle spring bubbling in the background.

Slowly opening her eyes, Margaret rolled over and looked at the clock. She was surprised by the time displayed. She seldom slept this late into the morning, and the luxury felt simply indulgent.

The options for her day’s itinerary where elegantly printed on a menu card and had been slipped under her door sometime during the middle of the night. The flow of activities would proceed at a leisurely pace but would keep her day filled, preventing her from thinking about work.

Shortly after calling for room service a waiter arrived with a cart and laid out her breakfast on a small table on her private deck overlooking the stark, yet stunning landscape. Once halfway through her first cup of coffee she picked up her cell phone and punched in the first number in her contact list.

“Good morning, Urban. You were right, I did need this, and all I’ve done so far is get a sound night of sleep. Now I’m sitting on my private deck enjoying a delightful cup of coffee and scrumptious hot fresh pastries.”

“I’m so happy you were able to get some rest. I wish I were there with you, but I knew you wouldn’t relax without me holding down the fort. And speaking of the fort, everything is quiet and running smoothly here. Not surprisingly since it’s Saturday morning. My phone hasn’t rung even once. I’m getting caught up on my review of last quarter’s report. So, please put the company out of your mind for the next forty-eight hours and relax.”

“I will. I suspect you helped my assistant organize my day. All the services I enjoy are scheduled. I have a facial, body wrap, massage, and a Tibetan sound therapy session. Tonight, I plan a long soak in an absolutely decadent spa pool here in my private serenity room. If I can fit it in tomorrow I plan to go into town to do a little shopping. The galleries here are magnificent.”

“I’m glad we chose your activities well. I wanted to make sure this weekend was as beneficial and enjoyable for you as possible. You deserve it.”

“Thank you. And, Urban, I know I haven’t told you or showed you lately, but I do love you.”

“I love you, too. Now relax, enjoy, and come back refreshed. I’ll see you soon.”

Margaret set her phone down and continued to sip her coffee. She probably did take her husband for granted, but running a company like Maggie Blair, Inc. was stressful, especially since the Giant Cactus Foods catastrophe.

She needed to be completely focused at all times. One lapse and everything she spent years building had been severely damaged.
